I. Greeting
T. Dear pupils! Arrange the letters in the right order
and you'll get the topic of our lesson "Rhythms. Music". You are
right, today we are going to talk about different kinds of music.
T. What kinds of music and dances do you know?
Key words
Music.
House, techno, jazz, rap, reggae, rock'n'roll
Dances.
Disco, flamenco, jig, jive, samba
T. You know, N. is keen on music and dance. I think he
can explain some words that you may not know.
P. The "jive" was danced to rock'n'roll
music in the 1950s. Couples performed acrobatic moves, with the man spinning
his pTartner through the air.
"Disco" dancing became popular after the
film "Saturday Night Fever", starring John Travolta, came out in
1977.
T. And all-night dance parties in the 1990s were
called "raves". Many "rave" clubs came equipped with
"chill-out" rooms where dancers could take a break and drink water to
stop them becoming dehydrated. "Rave" clubs had a reputation for
being places where young people experimented with drugs such as
"ecstasy".
T. (shows photos)
Look at the photos and Key Words and identify rock'n'roll, disco dancing and
rave. II.

task
T. Look
at the photos (1. Raving into new millennium. 2. Disco dancing in the early
1970s. 3. Jiving to rock'n'roll in the 1950s.) and listen to three people.
Which dance is each person talking about?
While-listening task
Tapescript
1)
It was very romantic. In the early 70s my
girlfriend and I, we went to the disco every Saturday night and danced for
hours. Saturday Night Fever was really popular, you know, John Travolta and Bee
Gees. Their music was really good for dancing.
2)
I really like house music. I go to clubs on
both Friday and Saturday night and I come home really late. On Sunday 1 sleep
all day. My mum gets angry with me, but, well, they did the same when they were
young, didn't they?
3)
It seems like yesterday, but I suppose it's
over forty years ago. We danced to music by Elvis Presley — real music, rock
'n' roll, much better than this techno noise today! I was a good dancer. My
boyfriend and I won a competition once. You needed a lot of energy to do that
dance, you know. I couldn't do it today.
Post-listening
task
T.
Divide into three groups. Listen carefully to one of the interviewers and try
to remember as much information as possible about "your" person.
A minute of relaxation
T. Listen
to the seven extracts on the cassette and grade them for dancing.
(Students
then exchange views and see if they share the same opinions).
T. Tell your partner what music you like listening and
dancing to.
T. (Divide
into 2 groups). Let's play the game
"Aquarium". I'll give you cards with tasks. You must choose in your
groups a speaker, a time-keeper and a secretary.

PROCEDURE
All pupils listen to a beautiful melody.
T.
I'm sure you like dancing. Listen to the music extracts and identify the dances
in the box.
Key words
Breakdance, the Xharlston, classical ballet, flamenco, Irish
jig, rock'n'roll, the twist, waltz.
T.
Have you found out what the most popular kinds of music and most popular groups
are among your friends and relatives?
SI.
In some ways, music is a language. People use it to express moods and feelings.
My friends are fond of music. They may hear it in a church or a town band. They
may hear music from records and tapes, or on the radio. My friend studies to
become a good musician. She takes singing lessons and leams to play the piano.
52. My mum enjoys classical music and my friends are fond of
popular music. My mum is a good listener. She listens to music without doing
anything. Sometimes she goes to concert of chamber music. As to my friends,
they prefer pop groups and are interested in the life of composers and singers.
53. Modem
music is very popular among my friends. Young fans rush to rock concerts to
hear rock-singers and groups — electronic sounds, brilliance of music is
central to the youth culture nowadays.
54. my
parents like folk music. We are a singing nation and my parents sing wonderful
as well. Every step in their life is accompanied by songs. Folk songs help them
to go through with problems, bad mood and pessimism.
Some
of my friends don't understand that national music matters so much that we
shouldn't refuse it. They like to listen to modern singers. I think it's very
good too, but the soul of the people — folk music — shouldn't be ignored.

Text Ballet
Ballet
began in Italy and France during the Renaissance and is still an important art
form in — Western culture. ...(1)... In Europe, dancers like the Hnngarian
Rudolf von Laban, also tried different ballet forms.
Folk Dance
Folk
dance is usually traditional and performed by members of a community or nation,
for example, the Balkan Kolo, English morris dance, and North American square
dance. ...(2)... Folk dances are usually group dances that are taught by one
generation to another. Today, well-known folk dances are often performed for
audiences, for example, the Irish Riverdance.
Popular Dance
Popular
or social dances often came from folk dances, although they are usually popular
for only a short time. ...(3)... Until the eighteenth century, social dances
were only held in palaces or the homes of aristocrats. However, in the late
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, social dancing became more popular.
Ballroom
dancing, which was a formal dance in a large room, became popular in Europe and
North America. Central European folk dances, such as the waltz and polka,
changed and became the most popular examples of ballroom dances. In the United
States the mixing of immigrant cultures produced new forms of dance, such as
square dancing and tap dancing. Before the First World War, new ballroom dances
came to Europe and America, for example, Fox Trot, Tango, Rumba, Cha- Cha. The
Argentine Tango was made internationally popular by Carlos Gardel through his
songs and films.
From
the start of the twentieth century, African-American rhythm and movements also
became part of popular social dance, in the 1920s the Charleston; in the 1930s
and 1940s the jitterbug; and then the rock 'n' roll dances of the 1950s.
...(4)... Dancing in couples returned in the 1970s and 1980s with 'disco'
music. ...(5)...This acrobatic form of solo dancing began in the poorer parts
of large American cities.

One of the strangest kinds of dance is morris
dancing from England. People dress up in white clothes covered in flowers and
ribbons. They have bells on their legs which make a noise when they move and
sometimes they carry sticks.
3)
In Scotland there are lots of different folk
dances. There are reels or line dances. Dancers hold hands and move around the
dance floor very fast. It's not very difficult to learn and is great exercise!

Text "KOBZARS'ART AND LIFE"
From the time immemorial Ukrainian land has been famous for
the art of kobzars (wandering singers and poets who accompanied themselves with
kobza).Besides, folk singers who played kobza, bandura and lira also were
regarded as kobzars.
The history of the Ukrainian Cossacks has found its
reflection in Dumas — a kind of heroic epos of folk singers — which were
performed in recitative.
Kobzars'
heritage was consistently destroyed under tsarist government and in Soviet
times. The kobzars were persecuted. Their art flourished during the years of
the Zaporizhian Sich, it was destroyed in 1775.
Now
the Ukrainians are seeking ways to bring kobza back to life. One of the kobzars
was Ostap Veresay whom T. Shevchenko presented "The Kobzar" with an
inscription. Regrettably many kobzars passed away. There are many dark spots in
the history of the kobzars' art. Our task is to revive the pages of history
about "blind homers" travelling along Ukraine's roads.
T.
Look at the pictures of Ukrainian musical instruments, name them and try to
guess what part of Ukrai ne they belong to.
T.
I'd like to add that the most popular instruments in Ukraine were the bandura,
sopilka, violin and dulcimer.
T.
What traditional Ukrainian folk dances do you know? Look at this photo and say
what Ukrainian dance is presenting.
S.
It is hopak. Hopak is an original Ukrainian folk dance of an improvised nature.
Its name is derived from hopaty, 'to leap and stamp one's feet'. It arose as a
male dance at the Zaporozhian Sich in the 16th century and gradually spread
throughout Ukraine. But hopak has several variants, a solo dance, a group
dance, and in Western Ukraine a circular dance or hopak-kolo. Hopak is culminating
dance in the repertoire of almost all Ukrainian dance ensembles. Hopak melodies
often appear in classical music.
T. Let's solve the quiz.
1.
The person who stands in front of the
orchestra. (Conductor)
2.
The sick used by the person. (Baton)
3.
A classical composition for the orchestra. (Symphony)
4.
A performance of music by one person. (Recital)
5.
A person who writes music. (Composers)
6.
Singing and acting together. (Opera)
7.
A written sign for a musical sound
of a particular length. (Note)
T. What can you say about Ukrainian pop music?
S.
The pop music genre is worthily represented by 0. Berest, I. Bondar, T.
Povalii, also some groups. Pop singers like S. Rotaru, N. Matvienko, T.
Petrynenko are known throughout Ukraine and far outside.
T. Are there rock musicians in Ukraine?
S. The apex of national rock music had been reached by the late
1980s. Among the groups reflecting by means of rock music the acute problems of
the national present were the Brothers Hadyukin and the Krock (hard rock), the BB
(folk rock), the 999 (jazz rock). Nowadays rock also is very popular genre
among young people and there are a lot of famous rock musicians in Ukraine, for
example "Green Grey", "Eliza's Ocean" and others.
T.
Write instructions about how to dance a traditional dance of Ukraine or a
modern dance. Write very precise instructions. Then groups take turns to read
their instructions to the class and the other students guess which dance they
are describing.
Prepare a short information about Ukrainian pop music.

to a song by Iryna Bilyk)
P. Exactly. This is pop music and it belongs to Ukrainian
music.
T. What can you say about Ukrainian pop music?
T. As far as I remember in 2004 Ukraine became very famous
for conceiting music. What had happened? Look at this photo, maybe it reminds
you somebody.
S. It is a Ukrainian singer, Ruslana, on Eurovision Song
Contest. As a result, 49th Eurovision Song Contest took place in Turkey, in
2004, and Ukrainian singer Ruslana with her amazing "Wild dances" won
the first place and was considered the best. She earned Ukraine 280 points out
of maximum 420 and the right to host the 50th Eurovision Song Contest. So, the
50th, jubilee was held in the capital of Ukraine — Kyiv.
S. I was so pleased when
Ruslana won in Istanbul because she and her song really deserved it. It is
absolutely fantastic to see the pride that Ukrainians had in her and her
victoiy. It really was the case that Ruslana was a fantastic advertisement for
a country with great potential.

Presenter. Welcome to New Horizons. Today we're going to talk
about Cool Britannia. But first, here's a report on the dance scene in Britain.
Reader. For years, Britain's image in the world was that of a
very traditional and conservative country — tea at four, the Queen, the House
of Lords.
The sixties changed all
this... the Beatles, Carnaby Street and swinging London.
Then in the seventies came Punk... the Sex Pistols, anarchy,
strange clothes. But, despite all this... Britain was certainly not the cool
centre of the universe. There were some clubs in the big cities, but for many
young people nightlife was not veiy exciting. Pubs closed at eleven o'clock and
everyone went for a take-away Chinese meal or straight home to bed. At that
time of night, people in other European countries were just starting to go out
to cafes and nightclubs. Then suddenly this all changed...
In the late 80s, raves became popular with young people in
Britain. These were illegal, all-night parties in fields or empty buildings.
Soon after, in the early 90s, raves moved to London nightclubs. Britain was
becoming a cool place.
The first big club was called The Ministry of Sound, an empty
building with bad toilets but a fantastic sound system. Now, London is full of
clubs and young people come from all over Europe every weekend to rave all
night.

Text :
1)
Last Thursday night, hundreds of fans went to
the Corn Exchange in Cambridge to see Canadian singer, Alanis Morissette. There
was not an empty seat anywhere in the auditorium, although it was art
incredibly cold night. "Sure is cold outside, but I hope we warm it up in
here for you", Morissette said to the crowd before she started to play.
2)
Morissette used a lot of material from her
first album Conflict. She also played a few songs from her new album, such as
'Everything But...', which tells the story of someone looking for love in the
wrong places. Moris-sette's singing was full of feeling; some songs with anger
and others with love.
3)
Although the auditorium was cold and the sound
was sometimes poor, the audience really loved the concert.
•
Morissette hypnotised everybody with her performance. Many people in the crowd
were obviously real fans and they knew the words and they sang along to nearly
every song.
4)
At the end of the concert, Morissette showed that she
was a true performer, with a brilliant version of Heartache'. She finished with
her latest single 'Ironic' — a song about being a star. While I watched and
listened, I knew that I was seeing the performance of a real star.

Ethan
Portman is a musician. He plays the piano. Ethan is 6 years old. He is from the
USA. His parents are from Russia. Ethan can speak.Russian well. He learned to
play the piano by working with the CD program Baby Einstein.
The
program began with sounds coming from the piano and included 4 songs. He gave a
concert on "The Tonight Show" with Joy leno in California.
I think he is a very good piano player and a talented
musician.
The
audience really liked him too. They clapped their hands and also cheered for
him.
In
my opinion the only disappointment was that he's little and didn't touch the
pedals.
The highlight was his own composition.
In general it was a great concert. I enjoyed listening to it.
